Abuja, Nigeria – Former Senate President Bukola Saraki celebrated Democracy Day with Nigerians, honoring 26 years of unbroken democratic rule. In a June 12, 2025 post on X (formerly Twitter), he acknowledged the nation’s progress while calling for stronger institutions and broader participation. He emphasized that democracy must evolve to serve all citizens fairly.

Saraki highlighted how a whole generation has now grown up under democratic governance—a milestone worth protecting. He thanked those who defended democracy during difficult times, noting their sacrifices ensured stability. However, he warned against complacency, urging continuous improvement in governance.

“Today, we celebrate 26 years of democracy, a journey marked by victories and struggles,” Saraki stated. “Each challenge has made us stronger, but we must keep pushing for accountability, justice, and fairness.” He stressed that democracy only thrives when institutions function properly and leaders remain answerable to the people.

Additionally, Saraki called for greater inclusion of women and youth in leadership. “A democracy that excludes half its population cannot succeed,” he argued. He encouraged more young people and women to engage in politics, policymaking, and public service to shape Nigeria’s future.

Moreover, he emphasized the power of collective action, urging citizens to demand transparency and good governance. “When we unite for justice, we become unstoppable,” he said. Active citizen participation, he added, will ensure a fairer and stronger democracy for coming generations.

As Nigeria reflects on its democratic journey, Saraki urged renewed commitment to democratic ideals. He reminded citizens that safeguarding democracy requires constant effort from everyone. His message reinforced the need for unity in building a nation that lives up to its potential.

Democracy Day, observed every June 12, commemorates the historic 1993 election—a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic struggle. The day serves as both a celebration and a reminder of the work still needed to create a just and equitable society. Saraki’s words resonate as a call to action for all Nigerians to uphold democracy’s core values.
