(DDM) – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has issued an urgent public warning over a fraudulent scheme targeting youths with promises of a ₦50,000 internship stipend.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) learned that the scam involves individuals posing as officials of the commission to deceive unsuspecting applicants.
According to the NDDC, the fraudsters request sensitive personal seeking details under the guise of facilitating payment for a non-existent internship programme.
The commission clarified that it does not demand such confidential information through unofficial channels or unverified platforms.
Officials urged members of the public, particularly young people seeking opportunities, to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to the scheme.
They emphasised the importance of verifying all information directly through the commission’s official communication channels.
The NDDC warned that engaging with such fraudulent messages could lead to financial loss and identity theft.
Authorities also advised individuals to ignore unsolicited messages, emails, or calls claiming to offer stipends or benefits without proper verification.
The commission reiterated that all legitimate programmes and payments are communicated transparently through its recognised platforms.
Security agencies have been alerted to investigate the activities of those behind the scam.
Observers say such schemes have become increasingly common, especially as fraudsters exploit unemployment and economic hardship to target vulnerable youths.
They noted that the promise of financial support often makes these scams appear convincing.
The development highlights the need for increased digital awareness and caution among Nigerians.
Experts recommend that individuals should never share bank details, passwords, or personal identification information with unknown sources.
They also advise cross-checking any opportunity that appears too good to be true.
The NDDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the public from fraudulent activities linked to its name.
As the warning circulates, youths across the country are being encouraged to stay informed and report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
