You no fit make law on Electricity standard – Senate to State Govs

Di Senate don advise state governors to withdraw from making laws on electricity equipment standards.

Di Chairman of di Senate Committee on Power, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, don explain say di 2023 Electricity Act (2023 EA) no grant states di authority to enforce technical electricity standards.

For di new law wey dem pass for 2023, nowhere dey for dat law wey give di states di right to enforce standards of our electrical equipment wey NEMSA do.

“So, I don discuss dis with di legal unit and decide to amend di 2023 law to make am explicit say for safety, Naija must get one standard rather than multiple standards.”

“We must to ensure say pipo no mischievously set up dia own standards.”

“We go make sure say we make am very explicit and as you sabi, federal law dey supersede state law,” Senator Abaribe talk.

Di Committee Chairman commend NEMSA for organizing di round table at a time wen substandard electrical equipment dey considered one of di major culprits of frequent grid collapse for Naija.

As e dey talk, NEMSA Managing Director, Engr. Aliyu Tahir talk say di event na one of di critical steps in di collective journey toward ensuring di safety, reliability, and sustainability of Naija’s electricity supply industry.
