The bill was slated for first reading on Tuesday and was quickly passed into second reading in absence of Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki.

Saraki is currently facing allegation of false asset declaration at the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

The bill when passed into law will remove the power of CCT to handle criminal matters to Civil matter.

In his lead debate on the bill, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi solicited for the removal of usage of Criminal Procedure Act and Criminal Procedure Code.

He said, “t is clear that the Act does not contemplate criminal trial so the usage of Criminal Procedure Act and Criminal Procedure Code should not be used as a procedural template in the Tribunal.

Senators overwhelmingly support the bill apart from Senator Yahaya Bello who warned the lawmakers on the implication of the bill on the image of the Senate.
