Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed a formal petition with the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports, in the petition, Akpabio is demanding the prosecution of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over her serious accusations.

Akpoti-Uduaghan allegedly accused the Senate President of plotting to have her assassinated.

The petition, which is dated April 3, 2025, was also sent to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

In the petition, Akpabio described Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims as “criminally defamatory” and an intentional attempt to incite public unrest.

The controversy began after Akpoti-Uduaghan made the accusations in a speech on April 1, 2025, in Kogi State.

In her speech, she alleged that Akpabio had instructed former Governor Yahaya Bello to assassinate her.

Akpoti-Uduaghan further claimed that the plot was meant to make it appear as though her constituents were behind the attack.

In response to these accusations, Akpabio has firmly rejected them, labeling them “heinous lies.”

He emphasized that the accusations were reckless and posed a serious threat to his personal safety and security.

Akpabio also stated that the claims were politically motivated, intended to manipulate public opinion and discredit him.

He argued that the accusations amounted to a deliberate act of blackmail and character assassination.

Akpabio further expressed concern over the widespread circulation of these false allegations across television, radio, print media, and social media.

He noted that the seriousness of the claims, especially their public exposure, necessitated urgent attention from law enforcement authorities.

The Senate President urged the IGP to launch an immediate investigation into the matter.

He also requested that Akpoti-Uduaghan be prosecuted under the relevant laws on criminal defamation, incitement, and false accusations.

Akpabio warned that the circulation of such damaging allegations could lead to political and social unrest.

He underscored the importance of holding public officials accountable for statements that could undermine national peace and stability.

This is not the first time that Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan have clashed.

Earlier, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim that led to her suspension from the Senate.

Her suspension followed allegations of misconduct related to the harassment accusation.

In his petition, Akpabio emphasized the need for greater accountability from public officials, especially those in positions of power.

He expressed concern over the increasing spread of misinformation, particularly when it involves damaging political figures.

The ongoing political rivalry between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan continues to attract widespread public attention.

With tensions between the two lawmakers escalating, the matter is likely to remain a subject of public interest.

As the situation unfolds, many are closely watching to see how law enforcement and the judiciary will handle the matter.

Akpabio’s petition signals the importance of addressing political accusations that threaten the peace and security of the nation.
