Senate Proposes N200m Compensation for Family of Boy Killed by NDLEA Officer

The Nigerian Senate has recommended N200 million in compensation for the family of Ivan Onose Omhonrina.

The two-year-old boy was allegedly shot and killed by a stray bullet fired by a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) officer in Delta State.

The tragic incident occurred on July 13, 2023, during an NDLEA raid on a suspected drug joint in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area.

Officers reportedly opened fire while attempting to arrest drug suspects. One of the bullets pierced a nearby shop, hitting Ivan in the stomach and injuring his younger brother, Eromonsele, in the eye.

Both children were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre for emergency treatment. Despite efforts to save him, Ivan died on the operating table.

The family has since demanded justice, pleading for accountability and closure.

Delta North Senator Ned Nwoko brought the petition before the Senate.

He pursued the case through the appropriate channels until it reached the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen.

After conducting a detailed investigation, the committee presented its report during Thursday’s plenary. The Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the deceased child.

It then adopted the recommendation to mandate the NDLEA to pay N200 million as compensation to the bereaved family.

Senators described the tragedy as both avoidable and deeply disturbing. They emphasized the need for increased professionalism among security operatives, especially during operations in residential areas.

The NDLEA has not yet issued an official response. However, public pressure continues to mount, with many calling for systemic reforms and better safeguards during armed operations.

For the Omhonrina family, the Senate’s move is a significant step, though it cannot erase the pain.
