Senate to screen Amupitan as new INEC chairman today

The Senate will conduct a screening for Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, nominated by President Bola Tinubu as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The screening is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Senate Chamber in the National Assembly Complex.

President Tinubu formally requested the Senate’s confirmation of Amupitan’s appointment on Tuesday, citing Section 154 subsection 1 of the Nigerian Constitution.

Amupitan’s nomination follows the departure of INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, who stepped down a month early and handed over to Acting Chair May Agbamuche-Mbu.

The Senate will review Amupitan’s qualifications, experience, and suitability for the role.

Amupitan’s confirmation would mark a new chapter for INEC, particularly with upcoming elections and ongoing electoral reforms.
