Senate urges FG to restructure NDLEA to combat drug menace

The Senate has passed a Motion on Nigerians’ involvement in the illicit global drug trade and the increase in domestic drug abuse by Nigerian youths.

The motion, which was sponsored by Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, and co-sponsored by 21 Senators, urges the Federal Government to restructure and reposition the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to be able to adapt its methods to combat the ever-evolving drug trade.

The bill also seeks to create more cohesion in the activities of the NDLEA, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC), and the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria to develop a collaborative approach to curb drug use and abuse in Nigeria.

The Senate also held the second and third readings of A Bill for an Act to amend the 2015 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Appropriation Act to give effect for the implementation of the Capital Budget Provisions beyond 31st December, 2016.
