Senator Natasha battles defamation charges over allegations against Akpabio
DDM News

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central has responded to a defamation lawsuit filed by the Federal Government.
The lawsuit stems from her televised accusations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, alleging his involvement in an assassination plot, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathers.
On Friday, May 23, 2025, her legal team officially acknowledged receipt of the suit from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The charges accuse her of violating Sections 391 and 392 of the Penal Code, which prohibit damaging false imputations.
Dr. Ehiogie West-Idahosa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, leads Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal defence team in the case.
He confirmed the team is ready to respond in court and uphold due legal process throughout the proceedings.
He described the case as serious but assured that the senator will be represented with professionalism and diligence.
In a statement shared with Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), her lawyers insisted the senator acted based on personal experience and facts.
They said her statements were made in good faith and should be investigated rather than suppressed through legal threats.
The legal team emphasized that whistleblowing and freedom of speech are protected rights in a democratic society like Nigeria.
The defamation suit follows a series of serious claims made by the senator in recent months.
She alleged that Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello conspired to assassinate her following her Senate suspension.
Akpoti-Uduaghan argued that her suspension was politically motivated and aimed at silencing her outspoken views.
She also accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and has filed formal petitions with relevant law enforcement authorities.
The Federal Government’s move to prosecute has stirred mixed reactions across political and public spheres.
Supporters see it as defending institutional integrity, while critics call it an attempt to silence opposition voices.
The case raises important concerns about free speech, gender rights, and justice in Nigeria’s political space.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team has called on Nigerians to support her as the matter proceeds in court.
They warned that the trial should not be used as a tool for political intimidation or suppression.
They maintain that the senator has only exercised her constitutional right to report threats and injustice.
Public responses have varied, with some urging her to present concrete evidence to support her allegations.
Others worry the lawsuit could discourage other whistleblowers from coming forward with legitimate concerns.
This legal battle may have lasting implications for lawmakers’ rights and political accountability in Nigeria.
It reflects a widening rift between Akpoti-Uduaghan and powerful figures within the political establishment.
As the court proceedings begin, all eyes are on the case and its potential to shape future discourse.
