Senator Ali Ndume, chairman, Senate Committe on Army, has appealed to the European Union to help rebuild health, education and housing facilities destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
He made the appeal when the head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, paid him a courtesy call in his National Assembly office, Abuja.
He thanked the envoy for her visit and the EU for its involvement in critical areas, especially humanitarian support for insurgency victims in the North East.
Ndume described the health sector in Gwoza as an emergency.
He said the only hospital in Gwoza was overstretched as a result of the town’s population coupled with the hospital’s lack of equipment and shortage of medical personnel.
He also commended the United Nations for its efforts at building 500 housing units in Gwoza and urged the EU to replicate the same.
He called on the EU to step up the campaign and enlightenment for politicians and the electorate on the need for peaceful elections in 2023. Samuela promised to treat the senator’s requests as a priority and thanked him for the wonderful reception.
She said her visit was to interact with major stakeholders on topical issues and get to know the progress and challenges of the various security encounters across the country.
