A dramatic confrontation happened at the Senate Ethics Committee hearing on Tuesday.

Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi of Ebonyi North clashed with former Minister of Solid Minerals, Oby Ezekwesili.

The heated exchange occurred during an ongoing investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had accused Akpabio of inappropriate conduct and abuse of power.

A viral video from the hearing captured Nwaebonyi calling Ezekwesili “a fool” and “a disgrace to womanhood.”

The clash happened as the committee reviewed allegations of harassment and misconduct against Akpabio.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had earlier accused Akpabio of inappropriate behavior.

The allegations emerged from a disagreement over seat arrangements in the Senate chamber.

Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed Akpabio had used his position to intimidate and harass her.

The Senate launched an internal investigation into the matter.

After the review, the Senate found Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of misconduct.

She was handed a six-month suspension from legislative activities.

The suspension sparked outrage among some Nigerians and civil society organizations.

Many people criticized the Senate for punishing her instead of addressing the allegations.

Oby Ezekwesili, a vocal advocate for women’s rights, condemned the Senate’s decision.

During the hearing, she questioned the fairness of the investigation.

Her remarks appeared to anger Senator Nwaebonyi, leading to the verbal attack.

Nwaebonyi accused Ezekwesili of interfering in legislative affairs.

The confrontation quickly escalated, drawing the attention of other lawmakers present.

Public reaction and concerns

The incident has generated mixed reactions across Nigeria.

Many people expressed concern over the Senate’s handling of harassment allegations.

Some believe Akpoti-Uduaghan was unfairly targeted for speaking out.

Others argue that her suspension was necessary to maintain Senate discipline.

Ezekwesili has remained firm in her stance against the Senate’s decision.

She described Nwaebonyi’s comments as a reflection of deep-seated misogyny in politics.

The viral video of the exchange continues to spark debates on social media.

Many Nigerians demand accountability and transparency in handling such sensitive issues.

The Senate Ethics Committee has yet to issue a final statement on the matter.

Observers believe the controversy could have long-term political consequences.
