World No. 1 Serena Williams added a new record to her impressive CV at the US Open on Saturday by breaking the women's record for the most Grand Slam match wins.

World No. 1 Serena Williams added a new record to her impressive CV at the US Open on Saturday by breaking the women’s record for the most Grand Slam match wins.

Serena notched her 307th victory at the majors with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win against Sweden’s Johanna Larsson.

With that win, she moves clear of Martina Navratilova at the top of the tree.

Williams is now level with Roger Federer for the most major wins.

A success against Yaroslava Shvedova on Monday will see the 22-time Grand Slam champion become the most successful player ever in terms of victories.

On the subject of her latest achievement, Serena said:

“It is actually a really good feeling. To be up there with both men and women is something that’s super rare.

“It actually feels good. In my career I have just been, you know, here for so long. So it’s just yet another thing, I guess.”

Shvedova will try to derail the Serena express after defeating China’s Zhang Shuai 6-2, 7-5.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Romania’s Simona Halep was not at her best but still managed to make it past Hungary’s Timea Babos 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

She thus sets up a last 16 clash against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro, who was too good for Russia’s Elena Vesnina.

Croatia’s Ana Konjuh scored a good win against Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to move into the last 16 at a Slam for the first time in her career.

The 18-year-old will play Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska next after she knocked out Caroline Garcia in straight sets.
