Sexual assault: Ogun man arrested for rape, attack with grinding stone

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested Mr. Micheal Akinmolayan, who allegedly raped and attacked his female neighbor with a grinding stone in the Sango-Ota area of Ogun State.”

As reported by the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), PUNCH Metro on Saturday gathered that the incident occurred on Thursday.

Micheal was alleged to have struck his neighbor’s head with a grinding stone, causing severe injuries.

The Police Command verified the incident on Saturday, stating that officers from the Sango-Ota Division, swiftly reported to the crime scene after being contacted and immediately took Akinmolayan into custody.

As reported, the victim, whose name was not disclosed, was immediately rushed to the hospital for urgent medical care.

According to the state command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, “the victim’s brother, Ogundimu, who lives in Mushin, Lagos, reported the crime on November 28.

“He was contacted by neighbours in Sango-Ota that Akinmolayan had seriously injured his sister.”

“The attacker left the victim with serious head injuries. Police investigated the scene, took photos, and took the survivor to Banuso Clinic, Ota, for treatment.”

“We found evidence, including bloody clothes and the grinding stone used in the attack. Investigation is ongoing.”

Sexual assault in Nigeria

Sexual assault, also known as sexual violence, is any unwanted sexual act or behavior committed against a person without their consent.

The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015: This law prohibits all forms of violence, including sexual violence, and provides for the punishment of offenders.

The Criminal Code Act: This law makes provision for the punishment of rape and other forms of sexual violence.

The Child Rights Act: This law provides for the protection of children from all forms of abuse, including sexual abuse.

Statistics of sexual assault

Sexual assault is a significant problem in Nigeria, with many cases going unreported.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in 2019, there were 2,279 reported cases of rape in Nigeria.

Also, a 2020 survey by the Nigerian National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) found that 1 in 3 women in Nigeria had experienced some form of sexual violence.

In addition, the same survey found that 43% of respondents reported knowing someone who had experienced sexual violence.

Causes and risk factors

Several factors contribute to the prevalence of sexual violence in Nigeria.

Cultural and social norms: Nigeria is a patriarchal society, and women are often seen as subordinate to men.

Lack of education and awareness: Many Nigerians lack education and awareness about sexual violence and its consequences.

Poverty and economic inequality: Poverty and economic inequality can increase the risk of assault, particularly for women and girls.

Conflict and displacement: Nigeria has experienced several conflicts and displacement crises, which can increase the risk of sexual violence.

Social and economic consequences: Sexual assault can have social and economic consequences, including stigma, discrimination, and loss of income or employment.

Health consequences: Sexual assault can have serious health consequences, including unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and HIV/AIDS.

Support services and resources

Several organizations and resources are available to support survivors of sexual violence in Nigeria.

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC): The NHRC provides support and resources for survivors of sexual assault.

Nigerian Police Force: The Nigerian Police Force has a dedicated unit for handling cases of sexual assault.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs): Several NGOs, such as the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) and the Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund (NWTF), provide support and resources for survivors of sexual assault.

Hotlines and helplines

Several hotlines and helplines are available for survivors of sexual assault, including the National Sexual Assault Hotline (0800 123 4567) and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) Hotline (0813 796 0048).
