Vice President Kashim Shettima has unveiled a new capital market master plan aimed at growing Nigeria’s capital market to ₦750 trillion by 2036, as the Federal Government seeks to expand investment and strengthen economic growth.

The plan, developed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), is designed to attract more investors, improve access to long-term funding and position the capital market as a major source of financing for businesses and infrastructure projects.

Shettima said a stronger capital market would help mobilise domestic savings and channel funds into productive sectors of the economy.

He also emphasised the importance of creating investment opportunities that allow more Nigerians to participate in wealth creation.

The initiative comes as Nigeria seeks alternative sources of funding to support businesses, infrastructure and broader economic development.

A deeper capital market could enable companies to raise funds through shares and bonds rather than relying largely on bank loans.

The SEC is expected to lead the implementation of the master plan, with priorities including improved market infrastructure, stronger investor protection and wider participation by retail and institutional investors.

However, achieving the ₦750 trillion target will require sustained investor confidence, effective regulation and policies that encourage more Nigerians to invest.

The success of the plan will ultimately depend on how effectively its objectives translate into increased funding for businesses and measurable economic benefits.
