Shocking: Vatican in crisis as Pope Leo begs for help (VIDEO)

Prayers and Pennies: Vatican needs both, says Pope

In a rare and emotional public appeal, the Holy See on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, unveiled a sleek fundraising video centered on Pope Leo XIV, appealing to Catholics worldwide to donate to Peter’s Pence, the pope’s primary charitable and administrative fund.

The one-minute video was first shown on giant screens in St. Peter’s Square, drawing attention from crowds gathered for the pontiff’s weekly audience.

These features soft piano music, footage of white smoke from the papal conclave, and Leo’s first words as pope: “Peace be with you all.”

The video’s message is clear: the Church needs money—urgently.

“With your donation to Peter’s Pence, you offer tangible support as the Holy Father takes his first steps as Pope,” the voiceover says.

“Help him proclaim the Gospel to the world and extend a hand to our brothers and sisters in need.”

According to the latest available data, the fund raised €48.4 million ($55.6 million) in 2023—but disbursed over €103 million, running a massive deficit.

The United States, Pope Leo’s native country, contributed just over 28% of total donations.

Yet even with the help of wealthy donors, the Church’s finances are deep in crisis.

The Vatican’s 2024 budget, which has yet to be made public in full, reportedly showed an €83 million shortfall, two sources with direct knowledge told Reuters.

Pope Leo XIV, elected on May 8, has become the face of a Church in need.

This campaign is the first major financial appeal of his papacy—and insiders say it may be the start of a broader fundraising strategy to shore up global operations and pensions.

The Vatican pension fund, once a cornerstone of clergy welfare, is also in trouble.

The last available estimate from 2022 pegged the deficit at €631 million—a figure that insiders now fear has ballooned.

Despite the Church’s sacred status, its financial struggles are earthly and escalating. Donations are declining, expenses are mounting, and transparency remains limited.

The Vatican hasn’t released a full financial report since 2022.

Peter’s Pence is the pope’s traditional fund for charity and church operations, dating back centuries.

They supports global missions, emergency aid, religious education, and the administrative costs of running the Holy See.

In recent years, however, the fund has come under scrutiny. Scandals, mismanagement, and real estate losses have dented donor confidence—especially in North America and Europe.

The video closes not with grandeur, but with simplicity: the image of Pope Leo bowing his head in prayer, and a donation link on screen.

As the Vatican attempts a financial resurrection, the faithful are being asked to resurrect the Church’s balance sheet—one euro at a time.
