Six people have died in a collision involving a truck and a commercial bus at the Nawfia axis, near the Enugu-Agidi Junction, along the Awka–Onitsha expressway.
The Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Bridget Asekhauno, confirmed the incident to journalists on Friday in Awka.
According to Asekhauno, the crash was caused by reckless driving and involved a yellow and black tipper with registration number FGG 21 XV and a red bus marked XQ 398 AA.
She explained that an eyewitness on the bus reported that the vehicle was travelling from Ebonyi State to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial.
In an attempt to make up for lost time, the driver allegedly engaged in dangerous overtaking, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming tipper.
A total of 32 people were involved in the crash — nine men and 23 women. Two men and four women died, while five women sustained injuries. The remaining 21 passengers escaped unharmed.
The injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where medical personnel confirmed the deaths.
FRSC operatives arrived at the scene shortly after the collision and swiftly cleared the roadway to restore normal traffic flow on the busy expressway.
Sector Commander Asekhauno described the crash as avoidable, stressing that it underscores the dangers of dangerous overtaking and reckless driving.
She extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged drivers to obey traffic regulations and prioritise safety on the highways.
She reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to strict enforcement of traffic laws, raising public awareness on road safety, and ensuring timely rescue responses during emergencies.
