At least six passengers have been confirmed dead while four others were rescued following a boat accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun Water Channel in Lagos.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) said the incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 8:35 p.m.
The boat, described as a savvy marine passenger vessel, was en route from Ilashe Beach House when the mishap happened.
The authorities said that upon receiving a distress alert, search and rescue teams were promptly deployed in collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders.
Four passengers were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, while six others were found dead at the scene. Operations continue to account for all persons involved.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accident may have been caused by a collision with a submerged object, though further inquiries are ongoing.
LASWA and NIWA extended their condolences to the families of the victims and urged adherence to safety regulations, including proper navigation, life jacket use, and avoidance of night travel.
The agencies reiterated reliance on official information sources and assured the public of continued efforts to enhance safety on Lagos’ waterways.
