Skales recounts performing for inmates while in police custody

Nigerian singer Skales recently shared an unforgettable experience from his time in police custody, where he performed his hit songs for fellow inmates.

During a candid interview with Zikoko, he detailed the events leading to his arrest and the unexpected turn of events.

Initially, a dispute involving a Nigerian billionaire escalated, resulting in his manager’s arrest.

Although Skales was free to leave, he chose to stand by his manager, ultimately leading to his own detention.

“My manager and I were locked up without justification,” Skales explained. “We clashed with a billionaire who abused his power.

After arresting my manager, they told me to go home, but I refused.

How could I leave him behind?” His loyalty backfired when officers detained him as well.

Once inside the cell, the situation took an unusual twist when an inmate recognized him.

The star-struck prisoner alerted Skales about a cell “boss” who demanded respect.

Upon discovering Skales’ identity, the boss requested a live performance.

“He asked me to choose between ‘Shake Body’ and ‘Emergency,’ even singing some lyrics,” Skales recalled.

“He promised better sleeping arrangements if I performed.” Skales agreed, entertaining the inmates with his hits.

True to their word, they rewarded him with a mat instead of the cold floor. The experience deeply impacted him, revealing the harsh realities of detention.

Skales also highlighted the inhumane conditions, stating, “Without family support, inmates starve because police won’t feed them unless paid.”

Before his release, he bought food for the inmates as a kind gesture.

Despite the ordeal, he remained grateful for their camaraderie and relieved the situation didn’t worsen.

His story underscores Nigeria’s flawed justice system while showcasing his resilience and humility.

Ultimately, Skales’ account exposes the abuse of power within law enforcement but also reflects his ability to find humanity in adversity.

His willingness to perform for inmates and later assist them demonstrates his compassion.
