SOS: The neglected Udesi Akai-Atti and Udesi Isong-Inyang bridge

For over 40 years, the collapsed bridge connecting Udesi Akai-Atti and Udesi Isong-Inyang has left more than 30 villages in despair.
The once-vital link has become a symbol of neglect and abandonment, leaving the community to suffer.
The people of Udesi are calling out to their prominent sons and daughters, including Dr. Edet Attih, Hon. Samuel Ufuo, and Hon. Chief Johnson Effiong, to intervene and salvage the situation. The community also looks up to Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, Sir Victor Antai, and the Akwa Ibom State Governor to use their influence and resources to rebuild the bridge.
Furthermore, the community is seeking assistance from oil companies operating in Mbo, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and federal representatives, including the Senator representing Eket Senatorial District and the Oro Federal House Member.
The collapse of the bridge is not just an infrastructural issue but a humanitarian crisis.
It has disrupted economic activities, restricted access to healthcare and education, and separated families. The community’s pleas have fallen on deaf ears for far too long.
It’s astonishing that a similar bridge collapse in Akwa Ibom State occurred in 2019, highlighting the state’s poor infrastructure and lack of maintenance.
The incident sparked outrage, with many questioning the government’s priorities and accountability.
*Rebuilding the Bridge, Restoring Hope*
Reconstructing the Udesi bridge requires a collective effort from the government, private sector, and community leaders.
The benefits of rebuilding the bridge extend beyond mere infrastructure; it’s about revitalizing a community and restoring hope.
We urge the authorities to:
– _Conduct a thorough assessment_ of the bridge’s condition and develop a comprehensive reconstruction plan.
– _Allocate necessary funds_ for the project, ensuring transparency and accountability.
– _Engage local communities_ in the decision-making process to ensure the new bridge meets their needs.
The people of Udesi Akai-Atti and Udesi Isong-Inyang have suffered for too long. It’s time for action, not words. We call on the relevant authorities to respond to this SOS and rebuild the bridge, restoring the community’s connection and livelihood.
