The Attention of the South-East South-South Network (SESSNet) has been brought to a Premium Times report about the widespread lop-sidedness in the latest recruitment exercise by Nigeria’s State Security Service (SSS).
The online newspaper had on Friday 28th April 2018 reported how the SSS loaded its agency with more people from the North than from the South of Nigeria in its 2016 recruitment.
So lopsided was the hiring that more people were employed from President Muhammadu Buhari’s Katsina State alone (51) than from all the South-east states combined (44).
Katsina is also the home state of the Director General of the SSS, Lawal Daura.
A breakdown of the newly commissioned cadet officers on geopolitical basis revealed that 165 are from the North-west, about four times as many as those who were picked from the South-south (42).
The figures for the other zones are North-east 100, North-central 66, South-west 57 and South-east 44.
While confirming this newspaper’s report to be true, the presidency through an unnamed official claimed the recruitment details were analysed out of context.
This lopsided recruitment carried out by the SSS, which has become a recurrent decimal of this administration would further widen the gulf between the Northern and Southern peoples and deepen the Marginalisation of South-East and South-South by the Muhammadu Buhari led Northern Oligarchy and the domination the Security agencies by the northern region.
As champions of True Federalism in Nigeria, SESSNet strongly condemns the lopsided recruitment carried out by Lawal Daura led SSS.
We also challenge the presidency to provide details of the alleged lopsided recruitment that occurred in 2014/15 which they claimed justifies the present scandalous recruitment.
We hereby demand the reversal of the lopsided recruitment with immediate effect and ask the government to carry out fresh recruitment that reflects the Federal character principle.
SESSNet further calls on the Federal lawmakers from South -East and South- south to ensure zero budgetary allocation for the State Security Services (SSS) in the 2017 budget if the government fails to address the lopsided recruitment in SSS.
Finally, SESSNet states it has lost confidence in the ability of Lawan Daura led SSS to handle such a vital national security organisation.
We hereby call for the resignation of the DG SSS with immediate effect.
SESSNet will not hesitate to explore all available legal remedy if above demands are not met within 28 days.
