Southgate resigns as England Manager after Euro 2024 defeat

Gareth Southgate has stepped down as England manager, ending an eight-year tenure that saw him lead the team to the World Cup semifinals and the European Championship final.
Southgate’s resignation comes after England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, where they lost 2-1 in extra time.
In a statement, Southgate said it was “time for change” and that he had given his all to the role. He thanked the fans, players, and staff, saying it had been the “honour of my life” to manage England. Southgate took charge of 102 games, making him one of the longest-serving England managers.
Under his leadership, England showed significant improvement, reaching the World Cup semifinals in 2018 and the European Championship final in 2020.
Southgate’s team also showed resilience, coming from behind to level with Spain in the Euro 2024 final before ultimately losing.
Southgate’s resignation has been met with praise and gratitude from former players and fans alike.
Jamie Carragher said whoever steps up to take on the job has a “very tough act to follow,” while Alan Smith praised Southgate for bringing “enjoyment” to the job and taking the fear out of it. Singer Louis Tomlinson also thanked Southgate for the “incredible memories” he had given the nation.
The Football Association has yet to announce a replacement, but assistant coach Steve Holland will take charge of the team on an interim basis.
The search for a new manager begins, with many speculating about potential candidates.
