The unusual tribute, deeply rooted in local tradition, reflected the agricultural heritage of the Andalusian town and celebrated the remarkable achievements of two footballers who rose from its streets to become world champions.
Fresh from helping Spain capture their second FIFA World Cup title with a dramatic 1-0 extra time victory over Argentina, Ruiz and Gavi returned home to an emotional reception that highlighted the pride their success has brought to the community.
Residents packed the town square as local officials welcomed the Spanish internationals with applause, music and heartfelt speeches recognizing their contribution to one of the greatest moments in Spanish football history.
The ceremony featured one of the town’s most cherished customs. Instead of receiving expensive gifts or cash rewards, the players were presented with fresh tomatoes weighing the same as their bodies. Ruiz received approximately 84 kilograms of tomatoes, while Gavi was given around 68 kilograms, bringing the total close to 150 kilograms. The celebrations went beyond the tomato presentation. Local authorities announced that two football stadiums where the players began their football journeys will be renamed in their honor.
The Marismas Stadium, where Fabián Ruiz developed his early football skills with Los Palacios CF, will now bear his name. Meanwhile, the San Sebastián Stadium, home to La Liara Balompié where Gavi started playing as a young boy, will be officially renamed after the Barcelona midfielder.
Plans were also unveiled for a permanent monument dedicated to the town’s three World Cup winners: Jesús Navas, Fabián Ruiz and Gavi. The monument will stand along Juan José Vaquero Avenue as a lasting tribute to the players who carried the town’s name onto football’s biggest stage.
For Fabián Ruiz, the recognition capped an outstanding World Cup campaign. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder was one of Spain’s most influential performers throughout the tournament, controlling matches with his vision, passing range and composure in midfield. He also contributed a crucial goal during Spain’s quarterfinal victory over Belgium and emerged as one of the team’s standout players on the road to the title.
Gavi’s tournament was different but equally meaningful. The Barcelona midfielder battled injury concerns before the competition and was carefully managed by head coach Luis de la Fuente. Despite limited playing time, the energetic youngster made valuable contributions whenever called upon and remained an important member of the squad throughout Spain’s successful campaign.
