ILEOGBO, OSUN STATE — Sporting Lagos have secured their return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after edging Osun United 1-0 in a decisive Nigeria National League (NNL) promotion clash on Thursday.

The result confirms Sporting Lagos’ immediate return to the top flight following a tightly contested promotion race that went down to the final day of the season.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the Lagos-based club sealed promotion from NNL Conference B after a narrow but crucial victory, with Alex Leme scoring the only goal of the match to settle the encounter in Ileogbo.

Goalkeeper Clinton Lawal also played a decisive role, producing a series of important saves to preserve the lead and ensure Sporting Lagos held on under sustained pressure.

The win proved vital as Sporting Lagos finished top of Conference B with 36 points, narrowly ahead of Akwa United, who ended the campaign on 35 points after also securing a 2-1 victory over Solution FC in Awka.

The promotion battle remained tense heading into the final fixtures, with both sides separated by just a single point. Sporting Lagos needed all three points to guarantee automatic promotion, while any dropped points could have allowed Akwa United to leapfrog them into the top spot.

Akwa United, former NPFL champions, pushed strongly until the end but ultimately fell short despite completing their own winning result on the final day.

Sporting Lagos’ achievement marks a swift return to the NPFL just two seasons after their relegation in 2024, following a brief stay in the top division.

The club will now compete in the NPFL alongside fellow Lagos sides Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City, strengthening the city’s representation in Nigeria’s top-flight football.

Elsewhere, Doma United have already confirmed their promotion, while additional promotion slots remain undecided across other NNL conferences as the season concludes.

Attention will now shift to the NNL Super 4 playoffs scheduled to hold in Ikenne, where the newly promoted teams will compete for the league title.

The conclusion of the regular season highlights the competitive nature of the NNL, where promotion battles often go down to the final minutes of the campaign.

Sporting Lagos will now look to prepare for their NPFL return, aiming to establish themselves more firmly in the top tier after their previous relegation setback.
