Still red at heart: Meunier’s Manchester United obsession

Thomas Meunier still dreams of playing for Manchester United, even at 33 years old.

The Belgian right-back says he’d cycle to England if it meant signing for his beloved club, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports.

Currently at Lille, Meunier joined the Ligue 1 side in July 2024 after spells in Germany, France, and Turkey.

Despite his success elsewhere, his affection for Manchester United remains strong and deeply personal.

“If they ever ask me, I’ll cycle there,” he told Gazet van Antwerpen with a smile.

He recently attended a United match against Athletic Bilbao, choosing to blend in with supporters.

“In with the fans, singing, à fond. Je suis un vrai,” Meunier said, proudly declaring himself a true supporter.

Though realistic about his chances, he fears a bad experience could ruin his love for the club.

“Suppose I play there and have a bad time, I wouldn’t want to hate United,” he admitted.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Meunier has long admired Manchester United, with past transfer links in 2019 and 2021.

He was with PSG during the first rumour and at Dortmund during the second, but no deal was made.

Now 33, a move looks unlikely, yet Meunier’s loyalty remains unchanged through the years.

He began his rise at Club Brugge, winning the Belgian Cup in 2015 and the league in 2016.

His move to PSG brought three Ligue 1 titles and two Coupe de France victories.

He also played in the 2020 UEFA Champions League final, which PSG lost to Bayern Munich.

Meunier joined Borussia Dortmund next and helped win the DFB-Pokal in 2021.

After four years in Germany, he had a short stint in Turkey before joining Lille.

Internationally, he has been a key figure for Belgium, earning 69 caps.

His standout moment came during the 2018 World Cup, where Belgium finished third, their best result ever.

He was named in the Marca/Forbes All-Star Team for his performance in that tournament.

Despite never wearing United’s red shirt, Meunier attends home games as a loyal fan.

“But of all the home games I’ve seen, they’ve only won two,” he said.

“You have to have a self-cruelty side to be a United supporter, right?” he joked.

His story is one of passion, persistence, and the power of lifelong football dreams.

Even without playing for the club, Meunier has already shown what it means to be a Red Devil.
