FG assures of safety of Nigerians in Iran

The Federal Government of Nigeria on Friday, June 27, 2025, provided reassurance to all Nigerian citizens residing in Iran, affirming that they are safe and accounted for despite recent unrest in the region.

This update comes as Nigerians closely monitor developments abroad amid rising security concerns.

Gabriel Odu from the Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) issued an official statement confirming that no Nigerian lives have been lost.

The statement further highlighted that there had been no reports of injuries on any Nigerian , in connection with the recent disturbances in Iran.

The government’s swift communication sought to allay fears among families and friends back home.

Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of NiDCOM, reiterated the Nigerian government’s steadfast commitment to the protection and welfare of its citizens living overseas.

She emphasized the critical role of robust support systems to ensure Nigerians abroad remain safe in times of crises.

Dabiri-Erewa’s remarks highlighted the government’s proactive and continuous efforts to safeguard Nigerians regardless of their location.

The statement also praised the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran for its quick and decisive response.

Recognizing the volatile situation, the embassy temporarily relocated some of its consular services to Armenia to maintain uninterrupted support for Nigerians in the region.

In addition, Nigerian residents were moved to safer locations, including Shomal, Qom, and Gazvin.

These are areas designated as muster points in case evacuation became necessary.

“We remain committed to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians in the diaspora,” Dabiri-Erewa affirmed, underscoring the government’s unyielding resolve.

Further assuring the public, a representative from the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran confirmed that calm and order have since been restored in the affected areas.

All Nigerian nationals accounted for in the country remain safe, according to the embassy’s latest updates.

The embassy also addressed a viral video circulating online in which a Nigerian man made alarming claims regarding the situation.

Clarifying the facts, the embassy explained that the individual featured in the video had a criminal record in Iran, including convictions for human trafficking and drug-related offenses.

He was previously imprisoned but later released on humanitarian grounds despite a deportation order issued against him.

The man had initially refused to return to Nigeria but was recently moved due to the unrest.

“Our responsibility is to all Nigerians, regardless of their situation,” the embassy stated firmly.

“While we do not condone unlawful acts, we intervened in the spirit of national duty.”

This recent development underscores the complex challenges faced by Nigerians living abroad.

It also underscores the Nigerian government’s continued efforts to protect its citizens even in difficult circumstances.
