A three-storey student hostel has collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving an unknown number of occupants trapped beneath the rubble.
The building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge and located beside Tonimas Filling Station, reportedly gave way late Sunday night.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said a joint security and emergency response team was immediately deployed to the scene to begin rescue operations.
According to him, police officers, alongside other security agencies, secured the area and coordinated efforts to rescue those trapped in the collapsed building.
“The Anambra State Fire Service and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency responded promptly and joined the rescue operation,” Ikenga said.
He noted that some victims had already been pulled from the debris and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, while rescue efforts continued.
Authorities said it was too early to determine the number of casualties or the total number of people affected, as emergency responders were still searching through the wreckage.
Ikenga appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, urging members of the public to stay away from the scene to allow rescue workers unrestricted access.
He added that further updates would be provided as more verified information becomes available.
