The Federal Government has officially fulfilled its long standing promise to reward members of Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their historic triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, presenting the players with housing allocation documents and national honours ahead of their latest continental campaign in Morocco.
The presentation, carried out by the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation, marked the end of months of anticipation after the players had waited for the fulfilment of the incentives announced shortly after lifting their record extending 10th WAFCON title.
The ceremony took place in Rabat, Morocco, where the defending African champions are preparing to begin their quest for another continental crown. Officials said the timing of the presentation was deliberate, allowing the entire squad to receive the rewards together before the start of the competition.
Leading the presentation were National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko and Nigeria Football Federation General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, who handed over the official title documents for the three bedroom homes promised by President Bola Tinubu after Nigeria’s remarkable WAFCON victory.
In addition to the housing documents, each player also received the certificate confirming the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, one of the country’s highest recognitions for outstanding service and achievement.
The Federal Government had earlier approved a reward package of one hundred thousand dollars for every player and fifty thousand dollars for each member of the coaching crew and backroom staff following Nigeria’s dramatic victory over hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
According to the National Sports Commission, the cash rewards had already been transferred directly into the players’ bank accounts before the presentation ceremony, ensuring that every aspect of the presidential promise had now been fulfilled.
Nigeria captured the continental title in unforgettable fashion after producing one of the greatest comebacks in WAFCON history. Trailing Morocco by two goals at half time, the Super Falcons mounted a spirited second half fightback to secure a thrilling 3–2 victory and claim a record breaking tenth African championship.
The victory reinforced Nigeria’s status as the most successful nation in the history of women’s football on the continent and further strengthened the team’s legacy as Africa’s dominant force.
For several months after the tournament, there were growing concerns among football stakeholders and former internationals over delays in delivering the promised rewards. Many feared the prolonged wait could affect the morale of the players as they prepared to defend their continental title.
The National Sports Commission consistently maintained that the delay resulted from administrative procedures rather than any withdrawal of the government’s commitment. Officials explained that the payments and housing allocations required approval through normal government processes before they could be completed.
With the presentation now completed, attention has shifted fully to football as the Super Falcons seek to defend their African crown. The rewards are expected to provide an additional psychological boost for the squad as they begin another demanding campaign against the continent’s top teams.
Speaking before the presentation, Dikko noted that ensuring the players received their entitlements while assembled in camp would serve as extra motivation ahead of the championship. He also reaffirmed the government’s appreciation for the team’s achievements and sacrifices in bringing pride to the nation.
The Super Falcons remain Africa’s most decorated women’s national team, with ten WAFCON titles to their name. Their consistency over the decades has established Nigeria as a powerhouse in women’s football, producing generations of talented players who have excelled on both the continental and global stage.
Beyond defending their continental title, the team is also aiming to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. A strong performance at the current WAFCON will be vital as the tournament doubles as Africa’s qualifying competition for the global showpiece.
The fulfilment of the Federal Government’s promises has been widely welcomed by players, officials and supporters, who believe it demonstrates the importance of recognising sporting excellence.
