As part of efforts to spur interest in environmental sustainability amongst the younger generation, United People Global (UPG), a Switzerland based non-governmental organisation, recently organised a symposium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The UPG which is focused on youth leadership training for impact in immediate society on environmental sustainability has produced a core of youth leaders on the subject matter in Nigeria.

One of the country’s sustainability leaders, Emem Mojima, who facilitated the program said the event was a follow-up to the gains of the recently celebrated 2025 World Environment Day.

According to her, the global issues of climate change and global warming and their impact on society make it very necessary to inculcate environmental sustainability consciousness amongst children in order to have a safer ecosystem for the future.

Speaking with journalists at one of the venues, Sumscript Schools, Mojima said “environmental sustainability education doesn’t have to wait until adulthood. Even the youngest voices can become powerful advocates for change, because when we start early, we build a generation that not only understands the problem but is equipped to be part of the solution”.

She further added that “a clean water body begins with us and that we have a responsibility to make the world a better place” by adopting responsible environment practices like proper waste disposal, avoiding the burning of fossil fuels etc.

United People Global is an independent, non-profit community headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, that empowers individuals to make the world a better place.

Since its inception in 2019, UPG has trained over 1,030 leaders from more than 100 countries through its intensive nine-week online program. These leaders are now leading local actions across sectors such as climate action, education, community development, and environmental justice.
