Tanko Yunusa showcases pan-Nigerian roots, emphasizes ethnic unity
DDM News

Tanko Yunusa, a prominent Labour Party member, has shared his unique background to promote unity across Nigeria’s ethnic divides.
In an interview highlighted by Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), Yunusa discussed his heritage, upbringing, and cultural experiences across Nigerian regions.
He stated that both of his parents are from Kano State, making him Hausa by birth and origin.
“My mother is from Kano, my father is from Kano, so I am fully Hausa,” Yunusa said confidently.
Despite his northern roots, Yunusa revealed that he was raised in Mushin, a densely populated area in Lagos State.
Mushin, he noted, is home to a large Hausa community, which helped preserve his cultural identity in the southwest.
“I grew up in Lagos, in a Hausa community in Mushin that is heavily dominated,” he said in the interview.
The politician emphasized that his upbringing gave him the opportunity to interact with other cultures and learn different Nigerian languages.
He is fluent in Hausa, his native tongue, and Yoruba, the dominant language spoken in Lagos and southwestern Nigeria.
“Apart from that, I speak both my native tongue and Yoruba well,” Yunusa added with pride.
Yunusa’s linguistic abilities have helped him relate with people across different regions and cultural backgrounds in Nigeria.
In addition to his Hausa and Yoruba ties, Yunusa disclosed that he shares a strong connection with the Igbo community.
According to him, he was “adopted by default” into an Igbo family that embraced him as one of their own.
This connection, he explained, further deepened his understanding of Nigeria’s ethnic diversity and cultural richness.
“My life story reflects Nigeria’s unity through diversity,” Yunusa said while discussing his inter-ethnic relationships and upbringing.
He believes his personal experiences give him a better understanding of people’s challenges, values, and aspirations across regions.
“I understand the pains, the culture, the aspirations of many Nigerians, because I’ve lived among them,” he explained.
Yunusa noted that his life is a clear example of how Nigeria’s major ethnic groups can live harmoniously.
He encouraged Nigerians to look beyond ethnicity and focus on national identity and collective development.
“We need to stop seeing ourselves through the narrow lens of ethnicity,” Yunusa emphasized in his message.
He urged political leaders to embrace inclusiveness, promote unity, and reflect the multicultural reality of modern Nigeria.
Yunusa argued that many Nigerians already live across ethnic lines, and their stories should be celebrated and amplified.
His remarks were made during an interview available online.
The conversation addressed the broader topic of national integration and the role of cultural empathy in leadership.
Yunusa’s story has resonated with many Nigerians who seek unity and peace amid ongoing regional and tribal tensions.
For Yunusa, diversity is not a weakness, but a strength that should be harnessed for national progress.
By embracing different cultures, languages, and people, he believes Nigeria can move forward as a more united nation.
