A landlord at Unity Estate, Alagbole-Akute, narrowly escaped death after a telecommunication mast crashed on his house during rainfall.

The mast, reportedly belonging to IHS Company, collapsed on Tuesday 03/06/2025 following a heavy downpour in the Akute area of Ogun State.

Panic in Unity Estate

Eyewitnesses said the mast, stationed in Ajuwon, came crashing with loud noise, damaging parts of the building instantly.

Neighbours ran for safety as the mast landed heavily on the structure, shaking nearby buildings and causing panic.

The landlord was inside the house during the incident but managed to survive with only minor injuries.

Police React Swiftly

Spokesperson of Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a press statement issued on Wednesday.

According to her, a distress call was received at exactly 2:39 pm from one Mr Moses Olalere.

Mr Olalere informed police about the incident, describing it as a terrifying moment caused by harsh weather.

Odutola stated that the landlord received quick medical care and is now in stable condition after treatment by health officials.

She described the incident as unfortunate, urging citizens to stay alert during this rainy season.

CP Orders Inspection of Masts

The Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has directed increased public awareness on safety during storms and other natural occurrences.

He also mandated Area Commanders to meet with firms operating telecom masts across the state.

The goal, according to police sources, is to ensure such structures are safe and pose no threat to human life.

CP Ogunlowo emphasised that preventive steps must be taken to avoid similar accidents in the future.

A full investigation into the mast collapse has already begun, police said, and updates will be given when available.

Residents Demand Action

Meanwhile, residents of Unity Estate have appealed to authorities to relocate masts positioned close to homes in the estate.

They complained that many of the masts lack proper maintenance and could collapse without warning during storms.

The community chairman called for urgent safety assessments and routine inspections to protect residents from future disasters.
