Tension In Uyo As Igbo Traders, Natives Clash

Uyo Local Government Council has announced the closure of Mechanic Village along Abak Road following a clash between some Igbo traders and natives of Afaha Offot.

The closure was contained in a press statement signed by Mr. Ubong Udofia, the Council Secretary on behalf of the Executive Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo.

According to the statement: “Following the crisis that ensued today, Friday, September 30, 2022 at the Mechanic Village, Afaha Offot in Uyo Local Government Area, the Management of Uyo Local Government Council has ordered the closure of the facility indefinitely.

“This decision of Council is to forestall further break down of law and order within the area.

“The Council Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, has directed security officials to continue to maintain adequate security around the facility and the entire area until investigations are completed and normalcy returns.”

Unconfirmed reports had that during a disagreement between an Igbo trader and a native, a sharp object was used by the trader on the eye of the indigene, which brought out blood.

The speculation that the native has lost his eye prompted a retaliation which turned into a fight between the Igbos and the natives.

It was gathered that many were injured and property lost but no life was lost as police were drafted to the market.
