Nationwide Tension as Retired Police Officers Storm Streets in Protest

Published

on

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned against the politicisation of the planned protest by retired police officers.

He accused some individuals of using the welfare concerns of the retirees to push political agendas.

IGP Condemns Political Exploitation

Egbetokun described such actions as both disruptive and manipulative.

According to him, turning a genuine welfare issue into a political weapon harms national unity and undermines respect for the police institution.

“It is disheartening to see some actors politicise a sensitive welfare issue,” he said. “They are using the real concerns of our retired colleagues to serve selfish motives.”

CPs to Enforce Order and Prevent Disruption

To maintain peace, the IGP directed all state Commissioners of Police to ensure the protest remains peaceful.

He specifically mentioned the Federal Capital Territory and other areas where official notices of protest have been received.

Additionally, he ordered CPs to provide adequate security for the protesting retirees. He urged them to prevent hijacks by miscreants, political actors, or any unrelated agitators who may attempt to disrupt the protest.

He also reminded them to respect the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. According to him, officers must treat all demonstrators fairly and professionally.

Retired Officers Deserve Respect

The IGP emphasized the need for dignity in handling the retirees. He acknowledged their years of service to the nation and insisted that their concerns be addressed respectfully.

Egbetokun instructed commanders to deploy both intelligence and operational resources to monitor the protests. This, he said, would ensure public safety and protect police institutions from any reputational harm.

Retirees Urged to Remain Lawful

Meanwhile, Force PRO Muyiwa Adejobi appealed to the retirees to protest peacefully. He said the Nigeria Police Force respects their grievances and supports their right to peaceful expression.

“We urge them to remain law-abiding and focused,” he stated. “We also warn against attempts by any group to hijack the protest.”

Demands Over Pension Scheme Continue

The protesting retirees are demanding removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme.

Many claim it leaves them financially unstable after long service.

Their call has sparked broader public interest, putting pressure on the federal government to act quickly.
