No fewer than seven persons were killed on Friday when gunmen attacked Bong Village in Doemak District, Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Eyewitnesses told our correspondent in Jos on Saturday that the attackers carried out a house-to-house assault, targeting women, children and the elderly.
Survivors described the assailants as heavily armed, adding that most of the victims were those who could not escape in time. Some residents are still missing following the attack.
A native of the area, Lawrence Dogari, confirmed the incident, saying, “For now, I can confirm that over seven persons have been killed, while some others are still missing.”
The Director of Press and Publicity to the Qua’an-Pan Local Government Chairman, Danaan Sylvanus, also confirmed the attack but said the exact casualty figure was yet to be determined.
According to him, the council chairman, Christopher Audu Manship, condemned the attack on innocent residents and is working with security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are arrested.
“The council boss strongly condemns the attack and is collaborating with security operatives to bring the culprits to justice,” Sylvanus said.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the police spokesman, Alabo Alfred, did not respond to calls.
Friday’s incident is the latest in a wave of violent attacks on Plateau communities. On Christmas Eve, gunmen similarly attacked Bum community in Jos South Local Government Area, killing seven persons.
