The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has released its 2025 disbursement guidelines for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports that the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, announced the allocations during a Strategic Workshop with Heads of Institutions.

He stated that the funds would support infrastructure development, research, academic staff training, and student services in tertiary institutions.

Each university will receive N2,860,562,362.66, consisting of N2,560,562,352.66 as normal allocation and N300,000,000.00 as zonal allocation.

Polytechnics will get N1,994,335,731.71, with N1,794,335,731.71 allocated as normal funding and N200,000,000.00 as zonal allocation.

Colleges of education will be allocated N2,178,428,260.79, which includes N1,978,428,260.79 as normal funding and N200,000,000.00 for zonal projects.

Echono emphasized that all physical infrastructure funds for 2025 must focus on renovation and rehabilitation of existing facilities.

He said this directive aligns with the Federal Government’s strategy for improving learning environments in tertiary institutions.

“This was communicated earlier to allow institutions to consult widely and plan their projects ahead of time,” he stated.

He advised institutions to engage their consultancy and physical planning units in preparing their infrastructure projects.

Breakdown of the 2025 disbursement

Echono provided details on how the 2025 disbursement will be structured across various categories.

91.08% of the total allocation will go to Direct Disbursement.

48.90% of this amount is designated as Annual Direct Disbursement.

42.18% is categorized under Special Direct Disbursement.

8.72% is allocated for Designated Projects.

0.20% is reserved for Stabilization Funds.

These funds aim to improve infrastructure, research, innovation, academic staff training, and student support services.

Key initiatives in the 2025 budget

Under the Special Direct Disbursement category, several strategic initiatives will be implemented.

TETFund will increase funding for the Special High Impact Programme (SHIP) in selected institutions.

The completion of the National Library in Abuja is another major project under this category.

TETFund will establish mechanized farms in some universities to enhance agricultural research and training.

Student hostels will be expanded through Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and direct construction projects.

Institutions offering medical courses will receive additional funding for infrastructure expansion to accommodate more students.

TETFund will introduce medical simulation and technology to improve medical training and patient care.

To reduce reliance on the national grid, alternative power sources will be provided to selected institutions.

TETFund will also focus on campus security, disaster recovery, and the completion of previously stalled projects.

Research, innovation, and entrepreneurship development

TETFund will continue to support the National Research Fund to enhance research activities in tertiary institutions.

The agency will strengthen Research and Development (R&D) by encouraging partnerships with industries.

TETFund will promote the Triple Helix initiative, which fosters collaboration between universities, government, and industries.

Efforts will be made to commercialize research outcomes to generate economic benefits.

To support entrepreneurship, 12 new Entrepreneurship for Innovation Hubs will be established in polytechnics and colleges of education.

These hubs will equip students with practical skills to boost self-reliance and national development.

TETFund will encourage the adoption of digital resources in teaching, learning, and research.

The agency will ensure the full implementation of the Tertiary Education Research Application System (TERAS) platform.

Call for efficient utilization of allocations

Echono urged heads of institutions to fully utilize their 2024 allocations before accessing the 2025 funds.

He emphasized the need for a fast-tracked procurement process to avoid delays in project execution.

Delays in fund utilization, he said, could slow down developmental progress in tertiary institutions.

TETFund remains committed to improving Nigeria’s tertiary education system through infrastructure development and academic support.

By implementing these initiatives, the agency aims to enhance learning environments, research capabilities, and student welfare.
