A Nigerian man has sparked a debate in the United Kingdom after engaging a group of British men in a discussion about Britain’s colonial legacy in Nigeria.

During the exchange, the Nigerian man argued that British colonial policies were designed to make it easier for the colonial administration to control different parts of the country, particularly through existing political and social structures in the North.

“Let me educate you because you’re ignorant of this,” he said during the debate.

According to him, the British administration relied on existing oligarchic and feudal structures in Northern Nigeria as a means of maintaining control over the population.

“What the British did in Nigeria was to make it easier to control the people in the Northern Region by piggybacking on the existing oligarchic and feudal system,” he argued.

He further claimed that the Igbo people resisted British colonial influence and “stood up to Britain.”

The comments have generated discussion online, particularly around Nigeria’s colonial history and the different administrative approaches used by the British across the country’s regions.

British colonial rule in Nigeria involved different systems of administration, including indirect rule, which relied heavily on existing traditional authorities in many areas. The nature and impact of colonial administration, however, varied significantly across regions and communities.

The man’s broader argument reflects an ongoing debate about how colonial policies shaped Nigeria’s political structures, regional relationships and post-independence challenges.

His claim about the Igbos’ resistance has also prompted reactions, with discussions focusing on the history of anti-colonial resistance in different parts of Nigeria and the various forms that resistance took.
