The judiciary fast becoming coffin of democracy — Shehu Sani

Share this:

Former lawmaker in the National Assembly, Senator Shehu San, has said that the Nigerian judiciary was fast becoming “the coffin of democracy”.

He said this following the controversial judgement of the appeal court which booted governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State out of office and declared Nentawe Yilwatda of the All Progressives Congress as winner of the last gubernatorial election in the state.

On Sunday a three-member panel of the appellate court had in a unanimous decision declared that Mr Muftwang was not validly sponsored by the PDP as provided by Section 285 [2] of the Nigerian Constitution.

The court, therefore, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Mr Muftwang and give the same to Mr Yilwatda.

But Sani while speaking on the judgement of the court in a post on his official X handle, described it as unfortunate, condemnable, and unacceptable.

He said, “The Court of Appeal judgement against the electoral victory of the Plateau State Governor is unfortunate, unacceptable, and condemnable.

“A broad daylight heist of the will of the people. The bench is becoming the coffin of democracy”.
