(DDM) – Nigeria’s former president, Muhammadu Buhari, was laid to rest on Tuesday evening at his private residence in Daura, Katsina State, marking the solemn end of a day filled with national mourning and emotional tributes across the country.

By 7:30 pm, just hours after the elaborate burial ceremonies, his grave stood in quiet solitude, haunting in its stillness. The crowd that had filled the compound earlier had disappeared, leaving behind a scene of deep silence.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) observed the unfolding moments after the burial in Daura. Our reporters described the burial ground at dusk as profoundly tranquil.

The outpouring of dignitaries, military ceremonies, and prayerful tributes had faded, leaving only the late president and his legacy to face eternity.

A Day of Public Mourning, Then Quietude

The day began with an influx of dignitaries and mourners from all walks of life.

President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, and Niger’s Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine joined Nigeria’s political, religious, and traditional elites in Katsina to pay their final respects.

Buhari’s remains arrived from London, where he died at 82 after a brief illness. A military parade received the casket, followed by a gun salute and funeral prayers led by the Chief Imam of Daura.

Thousands of mourners, locals and dignitaries alike, lined the streets. Many chanted “Sai Baba,” waved banners, and climbed trees for a last glimpse of the late leader’s coffin, draped in the Nigerian flag.

The government had declared a national public holiday in his honor. Following the Salatul Janazah, a final military salute accompanied the symbolic lowering of his body beneath shade trees he once rested under.

After the Crowd, Only Legacy Remains

By nightfall, the once-crowded compound fell silent. DDM reporters noted that the bustle had vanished, replaced by an eerie calm. Only a few security officials remained.

That moment, President Buhari alone in the earth, surrounded by stillness, captured a universal truth: in death, no matter the power one once held, each person must face their record and Creator alone.

Observers reflected that despite the elaborate ceremonies and national recognition, every life ultimately reaches this solemn moment of reckoning.

End of an Era

Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno called Buhari’s death “the end of an era” and “the loss of a father to the North.”

Many praised Buhari’s austere lifestyle, his anti-corruption campaign, and his dedication to national service.

But as DDM noted during its sunset vigil, public legacies eventually surrender to silence, leaving behind only memory, judgment, and the enduring impact of a life once lived.
