Over 100 people have been confirmed dead after a powerful earthquake struck Tibet’s Shigatse region, an autonomous region within China, earlier today.

The quake caused significant damage and loss of lives numbering more than a hundred at the last count.

The earthquake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Chinese officials and state media, however, reported it as 6.8 magnitude.

The earthquake resulted in over 100 fatalities and numerous injuries in Tibet.

The tremors were felt as far as Nepal, Bhutan, China and parts of northern India, with the epicenter in Dingri County, a high-altitude area near Mount Everest.

Rescue efforts are currently underway, with over 1,500 rescue workers deployed to the affected areas.

The extreme cold and remote location have made rescue operations challenging.

The epicenter was located in Tingri County, in the Tibet Autonomous Region of southern China, near the holy city of Shigatse.

The quake

The earthquake resulted in significant damage, with over 1,000 houses damaged or destroyed.

Rescue efforts are underway, with over 1,500 firefighters and rescue workers deployed to the affected areas.

The earthquake was felt across the region, with strong tremors reported as far as Bangladesh.

Dozens of aftershocks have occurred, with some registering up to a magnitude of 4.4.

The British Geological Survey warns residents to expect more aftershocks in the coming days and weeks.

This will potentially affect the region for months.

This earthquake occurred at a depth of 6 miles (10 km) below the surface, near the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plate boundary.

The area is prone to significant seismic activity, having experienced several large earthquakes in the past, including the 2015 Nepal earthquake that killed over 9,000 people.
