President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his $100,000 reward promise to each member of Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their historic triumph at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with players now receiving the naira equivalent of the promised amount.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) confirmed on Monday that the financial commitment had been honoured, bringing the cash component of the presidential reward package to completion more than a year after Nigeria reclaimed the continental title.
Each player is receiving approximately ₦140 million, representing the equivalent of $100,000, while members of the coaching and technical crew are entitled to $50,000 each.
The development fulfils a promise Tinubu made during a presidential reception for the team at the State House in Abuja on July 28, 2025, following their remarkable performance in Morocco.
The Super Falcons had defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final on July 26, 2025, producing one of the most memorable comebacks in the competition’s history.
Nigeria appeared destined for defeat after conceding twice in the first half, but Esther Okoronkwo converted a penalty in the 64th minute before setting up Folashade Ijamilusi for the equaliser seven minutes later.
Substitute Jennifer Echegini completed the turnaround with an 88th-minute winner, securing Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON championship and reinforcing their position as Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
In recognition of the achievement, Tinubu announced a series of rewards for the players and officials, including cash incentives, three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and national honours.
While the players had previously received their apartment documents and certificates of the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), the latest disbursement completes the outstanding financial component of the package.
NSC chairman Shehu Dikko confirmed the fulfilment of the commitment, praising the President for recognising the team’s contribution to Nigerian sports.
He said the Super Falcons had made the country proud and deserved to receive every reward promised following their continental success.
Dikko also acknowledged the contributions of the Ministries of Finance, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and Housing and Urban Development towards completing the process.
According to the commission, the fulfilment of the financial promise represents an important step towards improving confidence among Nigerian athletes, particularly against the background of previous experiences in which sporting rewards were delayed for extended periods.
The development also follows a similar reward arrangement for Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, whose players received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each in September 2026 after winning their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title in 2025.
Like the Super Falcons, members of D’Tigress also received housing documents and national honours as part of their reward package.
The latest development reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising sporting achievements, although the timely fulfilment of such promises remains an important issue for Nigerian athletes across different sporting disciplines.
For the Super Falcons, the payment represents the completion of the financial reward attached to a historic achievement that saw Nigeria reclaim the African women’s football crown after defeating Morocco on home soil.
