President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a ₦2 billion emergency relief fund for victims of severe flooding in Mokwa, Niger State.
According to a report by Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), this intervention follows the devastating flood that claimed more than 207 lives and left hundreds of families homeless across the region.
The President directed that 20 truckloads of grains be delivered immediately to the affected communities.
These grains are to be distributed directly to verified victims of the flood disaster.
To ensure proper execution of this directive, Tinubu ordered the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, to temporarily relocate to Mokwa.
Lawal will oversee the coordination and monitoring of emergency operations in the affected areas.
While in Mokwa, the minister will supervise critical response measures under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) drainage project.
The ACReSAL project is a World Bank-backed initiative aimed at addressing environmental degradation and water management challenges in Nigeria’s arid and semi-arid zones.
President Tinubu stressed the importance of swift and comprehensive rebuilding efforts in the affected areas to restore normalcy and economic activity.
He assured the people of Mokwa that the federal government would not abandon them during this difficult period.
According to the President, rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and ensuring food security are priorities for the administration as communities begin their recovery journey.
He further emphasized the need for transparency in distributing relief materials, warning against the diversion of aid meant for the most vulnerable.
This relief package is expected to ease the suffering of displaced families and help them transition from displacement to recovery.
It also signals the government’s commitment to supporting disaster-affected regions and improving climate resilience across the country.
The people of Niger State have expressed gratitude for the federal government’s prompt response to what many described as one of the worst natural disasters in the area’s history.
