Tinubu reaffirms commitment to strengthening Military, inducts two Agusta A-109S Trekker helicopters

To enhance Nigeria’s defense capabilities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, officially inducted two Agusta A-109S Trekker Power Attack Helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Friday, May 17, 2025.

The ceremony, held at the Presidential Air Fleet Apron in Abuja, coincided with the NAF’s 61st-anniversary celebrations.

Through a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s dedication to equipping the military with advanced technology to tackle security threats nationwide and across West Africa.

Despite economic challenges, the federal government remains determined to modernize the Armed Forces.

Recently, the military acquired Diamond-62 surveillance aircraft, T-129 ATAK helicopters, and King Air 360i platforms, alongside the newly inducted Agusta A-109S helicopters.

Tinubu emphasized that these assets would significantly boost the military’s combat efficiency against both conventional and asymmetric threats.

“We will keep investing in cutting-edge defense technologies to counter evolving security challenges,” he declared.

Furthermore, he stressed that national security remains vital for economic growth and investment.

Linking the initiative to his “Renewed Hope Agenda,” Tinubu highlighted security as the foundation for prosperity.

“Strengthening national security is a top priority to ensure peace and economic progress,” he stated.

He urged the NAF to maintain discipline, uphold maintenance standards, and intensify efforts to eliminate multi-dimensional security threats.

Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, praised the government’s commitment, calling the helicopter induction a milestone in NAF’s modernization.

Abubakar highlighted that the Agusta A-109S helicopters are specifically designed for high-risk operations, training, and emergency response.

He pointed out that Nigeria’s security needs demand a swift and adaptable Air Force to effectively address challenges.

Furthermore, he stated that these helicopters will significantly enhance counterterrorism, anti-banditry, and anti-oil theft operations throughout the country.

The event attracted key dignitaries, including Senator Austin Akobundu and Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.

Additionally, several service chiefs attended, showcasing the importance of this initiative.

Their presence underscored the collaborative effort to strengthen Nigeria’s security framework and ensure effective responses to emerging threats.

This induction marks a critical step in Nigeria’s military advancement.

Tinubu’s administration remains focused on providing the Armed Forces with the necessary tools to ensure national security and sustainable development.
