(DDM) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revoked the reappointment of Dr. Muheeba Dankaka as Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) and replaced her with former House of Representatives member, Hon. Ayo Omidiran.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, signalled a major leadership shake-up in the commission, which plays a constitutionally mandated role in ensuring equitable distribution of public offices and socio-economic resources across Nigeria’s diverse states and ethnic groups.
DDM gathered that in the same decision, the president appointed Mohammed Musa as the new Secretary of the FCC while retaining Kayode Oladele, a commissioner from Ogun State, in his role. Oladele, also a former federal lawmaker, had been serving as acting chairman since the expiration of Dankaka’s first term in 2024.
The changes are being viewed by political observers as part of President Tinubu’s ongoing strategy to refresh the leadership of critical government agencies in line with his “Renewed Hope” governance agenda. This approach has seen several heads of agencies replaced in recent months, particularly in sectors linked to governance, service delivery, and public accountability.
Although no official explanation was provided for Dankaka’s removal, the presidency stressed that the new appointments were aimed at strengthening institutional performance, improving transparency, and fostering fairness in the execution of public service responsibilities.
A statement from the State House reiterated that the Federal Character Commission remains central to maintaining national unity, fairness, and inclusivity in the allocation of federal positions and infrastructure. It added that Omidiran and her team are expected to “uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and unity in the discharge of their duties.”
Omidiran, a respected politician and sports administrator, represented Ayedaade/Irewole/Isokan Federal Constituency of Osun State in the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2019. She was also a member of the FIFA Women’s Committee and is known for her advocacy in sports development and women’s empowerment.
Mohammed Musa, the newly appointed secretary, is expected to work closely with Omidiran to enhance the FCC’s operational efficiency, while Oladele will continue to represent Ogun State’s interest and contribute to policy decisions at the commission’s top level.
The FCC was established under the 1999 Constitution to promote, monitor, and enforce compliance with the principles of the Federal Character, aimed at preventing marginalization and ensuring equal opportunities for all Nigerians regardless of ethnicity, religion, or region.
Omidiran’s appointment takes effect immediately, with expectations high among stakeholders that the leadership shake-up will breathe new life into the commission’s work and restore public confidence in its mandate.
