Tinubu staging coup against democracy by sending troops to Niger — Senator Sumaila

Mr Kawu Sumaila, the lawmaker representing Kano South Senatorial District, has said that President Bola Tinubu will commit a coup against democracy if he sends Nigerian troops to Niger without the approval of the National Assembly.

He stated this while addressing reporters at an event in Kano on Sunday.

Kuwa declared that Mr Tinubu do not have the approval of the Senate to send Nigerian troops to the former French colony.

He said, “There is inconsistency in ECOWAS. They are there to protect democracy. Is it not what they are saying? Democracy is a constitutional government.

“Ours is a constitutional government. We [senators] are constitutionally recognised by the Nigerian Constitution to give the president the approval to go to war.

“Therefore, we are waiting to see what they can do. They are complaining against the military junta of Niger while going against our constitution.

“So, for ECOWAS and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to go and start the war without the approval of the National Assembly is another coup against democracy.”

Mr Sumaila also said the lawmakers would not approve any request to go to war with the neighbouring country.
