President Bola Tinubu on Friday, July 25, 2025, authorized the immediate and complete disbursement of all allowances and match bonuses to Nigeria’s Super Falcons, a crucial move as they prepare for their 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco.

This significant development was announced by Shehu Dikko, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, during a press conference held in Abuja on Thursday.

Dikko confirmed that all financial obligations, have been released for swift payment to the players, the coaching staff, and accompanying officials.

These encompass the Super Falcons’ entire tournament participation up to the July 26th final,

He lauded President Tinubu’s decision as “policy in motion.”

Dikko underscores it as tangible proof of the administration’s intensified dedication to the well-being and support of Nigerian athletes.

This timely intervention is expected to provide a significant morale boost to the Super Falcons as they vie for continental glory.

Beyond the immediate relief for the Super Falcons, Dikko elaborated that ensuring prompt and seamless financial remuneration will become a standard practice in sports management under the current administration.

This commitment to timely payments aims to address historical issues of outstanding allowances and bonuses that have often plagued Nigerian sports teams.

According to him, this has led to distractions and demotivation.

The new policy seeks to foster an environment of financial stability and predictability for athletes, allowing them to focus solely on their performance.

This progressive initiative extends its benefits beyond football.

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, who are currently gearing up for their 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket campaign in Côte d’Ivoire, will also be beneficiaries of this enhanced financial structure.

According to Dikko, D’Tigress will similarly receive improved bonuses and allowances, signaling a broader commitment to supporting female athletes across various sports disciplines.

This inclusive approach reflects a holistic vision for sports development, ensuring that success is nurtured through adequate financial backing.

Dikko articulated the administration’s overarching philosophy for sports governance.

He stated, “This is the kind of sports administration we are building, one rooted in dignity, trust and shared prosperity.”

Dikko emphasized that the comprehensive reforms being implemented by President Tinubu in the sports sector are designed to leave a lasting positive legacy.

According to Dikko, “Future generations would appreciate President Tinubu’s reforms in the sports sector.”

This sentiment highlights a strategic long-term vision to elevate Nigerian sports to new heights, not only through performance but also through ethical and transparent management.

The President’s directive and the National Sports Commission’s subsequent actions mark a pivotal moment in Nigerian sports.

It represents a clear departure from past practices where athletes often faced considerable delays and challenges in receiving their due entitlements.

By ensuring that financial commitments are met promptly and consistently, the administration aims to cultivate an environment of trust and professionalism.

This proactive approach is expected to significantly improve athlete morale, foster greater dedication, and ultimately contribute to enhanced performance on the international stage.

The emphasis on dignity and shared prosperity underscores a commitment to treating athletes as valuable national assets, deserving of timely and complete compensation for their hard work and dedication in representing Nigeria.

This policy shift is not merely about financial transactions; it’s about building a sustainable framework for athletic success and welfare.
