In a bold move to reduce carbon emissions and create jobs for Nigeria’s youth, President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday unveiled electric tricycles and motorcycles designed to cut transportation costs by up to 40 per cent.
Speaking at the inauguration, President Tinubu said the initiative is part of Nigeria’s Energy Transformation Programme, aimed at promoting cleaner, sustainable transport and lowering the country’s carbon footprint.
“The electric tricycle will reduce transportation costs by 40 per cent and offer a cleaner alternative to tricycles powered by fossil fuels,” he said.
Represented at the event by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Mohammed Dingyadi, the President emphasized that the programme also seeks to boost employment opportunities for the youth.
Through the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the government plans to initiate and implement schemes that align with global energy transitions while generating jobs, promoting a green economy, and fostering public-private partnerships.
The rollout of electric tricycles is expected to revolutionize urban mobility, cut operational costs for transport operators, and contribute to Nigeria’s environmental sustainability goals.
The initiative also positions Nigeria as a regional leader in adopting clean transportation technologies.
