Tinubu’s historic address: Democracy Day message to shape Nigeria’s future

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver his first State of the Nation address today.

The speech is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. before a joint session of the National Assembly, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathers.

It forms a key part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration across the nation.

Tinubu’s address is expected to focus on national priorities and democratic progress.

It will also highlight the current state of governance under his administration.

June 12 is a deeply symbolic day in Nigeria’s political history.

It marks the anniversary of the 1993 presidential election, acclaimed as Nigeria’s freest and fairest.

That election saw Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola emerge as the presumed winner.

However, the results were annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

The annulment triggered widespread protests and unrest across the country.

MKO Abiola, a respected businessman, declared himself president in 1994 at Epetedo, Lagos.

This followed months of failed legal and political efforts to reclaim his mandate.

Abiola’s bold declaration led to his arrest on charges of treason.

He was detained by the military and died in custody on July 7, 1998.

His death shocked the nation and intensified calls for democratic reform.

In 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari officially recognised June 12 as Democracy Day.

This replaced May 29 as the national day for celebrating civil rule.

Buhari posthumously honoured Abiola with the GCFR, Nigeria’s highest national title.

He also acknowledged him as the rightful winner of the 1993 election.

To mark today’s event, the Federal Government cancelled the usual military parade.

This move aims to honour the occasion with reflection and national dialogue.
