Tinubu’s Media Aide Dumps PDP, Slams Leadership Failures

Daniel M. Bwala, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

His decision, made public through a letter dated July 10, 2025, was addressed to the PDP Chairman of Garkida Ward in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

In it, Bwala cited the party’s declining adherence to leadership principles and accountability as the key reason behind his exit.

In the resignation letter, Bwala expressed profound disappointment in the direction the PDP has taken in recent times.

According to him, the party has deviated significantly from the values and vision that once made it a formidable political force and a genuine platform for national progress.

“I hereby formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately,” Bwala wrote.

He added that his departure stems from growing disillusionment with the party’s current leadership, which he claimed no longer embodies the principles that initially attracted him to its ranks.

Bwala argued that political parties must serve as platforms for transformative leadership, responsible governance, and the realization of the people’s collective aspirations.

However, in his view, the PDP has strayed far from this role.

He accused the party of lacking direction and vision, further noting that internal divisions and poor leadership had eroded public trust.

“Regrettably, the current leadership has failed to uphold these values, resulting in a lack of direction, internal discord, and weakening of public trust,” he wrote.

“I can no longer, in good conscience, remain part of an organization that no longer reflects the ideals of service, integrity and democratic progress.”

He concluded the letter with an acknowledgment of the relationships he had built during his time in the party, thanking members and colleagues for the experiences shared.

Bwala’s resignation is particularly notable due to his high-profile role in the PDP during the 2023 general elections.

He had served as the spokesman for the presidential campaign of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s flag bearer in that election.

At the time, Bwala was one of the party’s most vocal and visible defenders, regularly engaging with the media to promote Atiku’s candidacy and critique the opposition.

His defection from the PDP, followed by his subsequent appointment in November 2024 as Special Adviser to President Tinubu, the candidate he once opposed, raised eyebrows within the political space.

Many political observers viewed it as a dramatic shift in allegiance, underscoring the fluidity and complexity of Nigerian politics.

This is supposedly where ideological commitment often takes a backseat to strategic realignments.

Now, with his resignation from the PDP officially confirmed, Bwala’s political journey appears to have come full circle.

From opposition spokesperson to presidential adviser, and now a formal exit from the party he once represented, his move signals both personal and political recalibration.

It also brings to light ongoing tensions within the PDP, which has been grappling with internal divisions and leadership crises since its defeat in the 2023 presidential election.

The party has struggled to present a united front, with several high-ranking members either defecting to rival parties or expressing dissatisfaction with the current leadership.

Bwala’s departure is expected to further stir debate about the PDP’s future, especially as it attempts to rebuild and reposition itself ahead of future electoral contests.

His critique of the party’s current state reflects a broader sentiment among some members who believe the PDP is in urgent need of reform.

According to them, this is if the PDP hopes to remain relevant in Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.

While Bwala has yet to publicly declare full membership in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), his role in President Tinubu’s administration suggests an alignment with the party’s leadership and vision.

His departure from the PDP could also embolden other dissatisfied members to reconsider their positions, potentially triggering more defections or internal re-evaluations.

In the ever-evolving terrain of Nigerian politics, Bwala’s resignation is a reminder of how quickly loyalties can shift, and how vital it is for parties to remain anchored in the values that first earned them the public’s trust.
