(DDM) – Nigeria’s largest airline, Air Peace, is set to commence a direct flight connecting Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, with São Paulo, Brazil’s financial hub.

The announcement came during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official state visit to Brazil, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Diaspora Digital Medi (DDM) gathered that the direct flight arrangement was one of several agreements reached during high-level discussions between President Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Speaking at a joint press conference, President Lula confirmed that both nations had approved the launch of the direct flight, stressing the importance of increased connectivity.

“Increasing the direct connections between Nigeria and Brazil is another essential step to strengthen the ties between our societies. We have approved the launch of a direct flight, to be operated by Nigeria’s largest airline company, Air Peace, between Lagos and São Paulo,” President Lula stated.

The direct flight is expected to enhance business, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, fostering stronger economic and cultural relations between Africa’s most populous country and Latin America’s largest economy.

Prior to the announcement, both leaders held a two-hour expanded bilateral meeting at the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília, where they discussed strategic collaborations across multiple sectors.

Following the discussions, several key agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filhos, formalized a Bilateral Air Services Agreement.

This agreement aims to expand trade opportunities, enhance air connectivity, and strengthen the movement of people and goods between Nigeria and Brazil.

The duo also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political consultations, designed to address shared bilateral, regional, and international concerns, further consolidating diplomatic ties.

In the science and technology sector, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Geoffrey Nnaji, and Brazil’s Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Luciana Santos, signed an MoU covering cooperation in biotechnology, bioeconomy, ocean science, innovation ecosystems, energy, space development, digital transformation, and research on raw materials.

On the economic front, Nigeria’s Bank of Agriculture Managing Director, Ayo Sotinrin, and Brazil’s Minister for the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), Aluísio Mercadante, signed an MoU to promote trade and investment.

The agreement seeks to harmonize agricultural financing, support joint investment projects, and foster sustainable economic development in both countries.

Analysts note that Nigeria and Brazil have maintained historic cultural and trade links dating back to the transatlantic period, and this new air connectivity is expected to deepen economic cooperation while strengthening diplomatic and social ties.

The direct Air Peace flight from Lagos to São Paulo is anticipated to commence within the coming months, offering new opportunities for Nigerian businesses, tourists, and the diaspora community seeking seamless travel to Brazil.
