DDM News

Awka, the capital of Anambra State, was thrown into shock and mourning on Monday night following the tragic killing of Dr. Fabian Osita, a prominent lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK)
The unfortunate incident occurred in the Aroma area, a known hotspot for criminal activities, as Dr. Osita was reportedly on his way home after a day’s work.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the attack was carried out by unidentified armed men who targeted Dr. Osita in an attempt to hijack his vehicle.
According to accounts gathered by Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) the assailants ordered the lecturer to surrender his car.
However, when he reportedly resisted, they shot him in the head at close range.
Dr. Osita succumbed to his injuries on the spot, and the attackers fled the scene in his vehicle, abandoning his lifeless body by the roadside.
The brutal murder of Dr. Osita has sparked renewed concerns about the alarming rise in insecurity within Awka and its surrounding areas.
Over the past few months, residents have expressed growing unease over frequent reports of armed robberies, car hijackings, and violent attacks.
The Aroma area, where this incident occurred, has been identified as a particularly high-risk zone where criminal activities persist unabated.
The university community has been left devastated by the tragic loss of Dr. Osita, who was a respected figure in the Business Department at UNIZIK.
Colleagues, students, and members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have described him as a committed academic who was passionate about education and the progress of his students.
The grief has been palpable within the institution, as many struggle to come to terms with the senseless nature of his death.
Confirming the incident, the Chief Security Officer of UNIZIK, Ken Chukwurah, expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding Dr. Osita’s killing.
He acknowledged the insecurity in the region and stated that the university’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is planning to stage a protest to demand immediate action from security agencies.
The union has emphasized that the safety of both staff and students must be prioritized to prevent further tragedies.
In response to the incident, the Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the murder.
The command’s spokesperson urged members of the public with any useful information to come forward, pledging that the authorities would ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
This killing underscores the growing security challenges facing residents of Awka and Anambra State at large.
What was once a relatively peaceful city has seen a troubling escalation in violent crimes, leaving both the public and institutions like UNIZIK vulnerable.
The university community, which relies on a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning, is now confronted with an urgent need for improved security measures.
Many residents have called on the state government and law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to combat criminal elements operating in the region.
The tragic fate of Dr. Osita is a grim reminder of the urgent need for a coordinated response to insecurity, particularly in areas like Aroma, where criminal activity appears to be on the rise.
As the investigation continues and the university mourns the loss of one of its finest lecturers, the incident has become a rallying point for discussions about the need for comprehensive security reforms.
The untimely death of Dr. Osita not only highlights the human cost of insecurity but also calls for immediate and concrete action to ensure such a tragedy does not repeat itself.
For now, the entire UNIZIK community and the residents of Awka are left grieving.
Their sense of safety shaken by the devastating loss of Dr. Fabian Osita—a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the development of future leaders.
