The Nigerian entertainment industry has been struck by sadness following the death of popular Nollywood actress and brand influencer, Monalisa Stephen.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Monalisa Stephen passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, after a brief but critical health crisis involving internal bleeding and complications from low blood sugar.
Her death was confirmed by Seun Oloketuyi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, through a post on his official Instagram page on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
Oloketuyi described the late Monalisa Stephen as a hardworking and vibrant personality whose impact on both social media and the screen will not be forgotten.
He further noted that her immediate younger sister confirmed her death after all attempts to save her failed.
Monalisa Stephen was well-known for her boldness in advocating for body positivity, self-confidence, and the mental health of women, particularly in a society that often shames those with different body types.
She used her platform to discuss issues like depression, body image, and societal expectations, often championing the cause of plus-sized women.
While she featured in a few Nollywood productions, she was especially known for her strong presence on Instagram, where she amassed a large following.
Her death has left a significant void in the Nollywood industry and the digital influencer community, where she was seen as a role model.
Her passing comes just one day after another emotional revelation shook Nollywood.
On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, veteran actress Jumoke George shared a heart-wrenching video on Instagram, revealing her struggles with homelessness, health issues, and crippling debt.
Jumoke, who had been a leading figure in Nollywood for many years, disclosed that her first son, Adeola, who turned 41 in May, has been missing for over four years.
She also pleaded for public prayers and support, citing her need for ₦400,000 to undergo critical tests for her heart and brain.
These recent tragedies highlight the unseen challenges faced by actors in the Nigerian film industry, both during and after their careers.
The shocking losses and revelations are pushing conversations on the need for more support and welfare systems within Nollywood to protect the health and well-being of its stars.
